In precision agriculture, fertiliser application decisions are made in two ways: based on a set number of applications at specific crop growth stages before harvest, or based on crop growth and health between those stages. Farmers also need to apply targeted fertiliser applications are to promote more even growth and achieve desired yields.

Approach

We knew this feature was highly requested, but we needed to understand what our customers were expecting and what was technically possible. I conducted interviews with partners and their customers to understand their needs and goals. We also researched competitor products to learn about their approaches to image-based planning From these activities we identified a core set of features and functionalities necessary to include in our minimum viable product (MVP) and beyond.

The competitor research showed that their solutions were often too complex, with all options presented on one page and unclear instructions on what each option did. To provide farmers with clear guidance on fertiliser spreading, I created a stepped process based on the three basic rules:

This approach allows farmers to answer each question one at a time, focusing on the decisions they need to make. A final summary step was also included to allow for easy plan review and adjustments if needed. During prototype testing we found out that this approach resonated well with farmers and it became the guiding principle for future design decisions.

Designing for flexibility

The long-term plan for image-based planning included two tools for fertiliser and seed plans. These tools had powerful features, such as choosing from different imagery types, drawing polygons for rate overrides, and syncing plans directly with farm machinery.

My design decisions were based on the product strategy. The initial version of the image-based planning tool was designed in a way that allowed more features to be added over time without making significant design changes. As more features were added, they fit into one of the three steps without requiring users to relearn how to use the tool.

Results & impact

The release of image-based planning has been a huge success. There has been wide adoption across the user base with regular positive feedback and suggestions for more features. It enabled our partners to retain key accounts and onboard new ones. In the spring 2021 season there were:
